Spain repairs Leopard 2 tanks for Ukraine

Spain began repairing Leopard 2 tanks, which will soon be transferred to Ukraine. At the same time, the training of Leopard 2 crews continues.

This was stated by the Minister of Defense of Spain, Margarita Robles, in an interview with La Vanguardia.

“There are several Leopard modifications: 2A4 and 2A6. 2А4 that were stored in Zaragoza in deplorable conditions are now being repaired. Soon the overhaul will be completed,” she stated.

This allows the tanks to be included in the battalion along with tanks donated by other countries

At the same time, she added that the training of tank crews had begun.

“At the same time, we have already begun training the crews of these Leopard tanks and the teams that will maintain them,” Robles said.

Earlier, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Ukraine will receive up to 10 Leopard tanks from Madrid.

In addition, Spanish instructors will train 55 Ukrainian soldiers to operate with the German Leopard 2A4 tanks.

During his visit to Kyiv, Pedro Sánchez also mentioned combat aviation. He said that Spain is not against sending fighter jets, but, according to him, this issue should be “discussed with allies.”

The Prime Minister also stressed that it is necessary to arm Ukraine for achieving peace and added: “I have no doubt about this.”

Currently, the Spanish defense company Santa Bárbara Sistemas, which specializes in the modernization and maintenance of armored vehicles, is working on the preparation of six Leopard 2A4 tanks at its facilities in Alcala de Guadaira in Seville.

Tanks arrived there for recovery in early February, they were brought from the Casetas armored vehicle storage base located in Zaragoza.
