The USA ordered six more NASAMS air defense systems for Ukraine
The Pentagon signed a $1.2 billion contract with Raytheon Technologies to produce the NASAMS air defense systems for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The press service of the U.S. Department of Defense reported about this.
According to Reuters, the order would cover six air defense systems.
The $1.216 billion deal includes the production of SAM launchers, related equipment, spare parts, training of Ukrainian military personnel who will operate the NASAMS systems, and other services.
The U.S. Department of Defense mentioned the work will be carried out at a plant in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, with an estimated completion date of November 28, 2025.
As previously reported, the previous contract worth $182 million was signed on August 26. It covers the supply of two NASAMS batteries to Ukraine.
Thus, in total, Washington intends to supply Ukraine with eight such new air defense systems. These NASAMS air defense systems are included in the $3 billion US military aid package announced on August 24, 2022.
As previously reported, on November 7, Oleksii Reznikov, Minister of Defense of Ukraine, announced that new air defense equipment have arrived in Ukraine. This regards the NASAMS air defense systems from the USA and the ASPIDE anti-aircraft missile system from Spain.
Subsequently, the Head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, reported that the air defense systems provided by the United States showcased their effectiveness in intercepting Russian missiles during the Russian missile strikes on Ukraine on November 15.
Back in July, it was reported that the U.S. Department of Defense started purchasing NASAMS air defense systems, which were promised to be delivered to Ukraine.
NASAMS systems are produced by a consortium of the American corporation Raytheon Technologies and the Norwegian group Kongsberg. The SAM includes launchers and Raytheon AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel radar stations from the Raytheon and Kongsberg consortium.
Each mobile launcher is equipped with six containers with anti-aircraft missiles. The range of the NASAMS II anti-aircraft system configuration using AIM-120С AMRAAM missiles is up to 25 km, and the reach in altitude is up to 14-15 km.
